JAY Z 1999 Thick Oversized T-Shirt
Mugshot Story
In the early hours of 3 December 1999, 29-year-old Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter surrendered at Manhattan’s Midtown South precinct after being accused of stabbing record executive Lance “Un” Rivera two nights earlier during Q-Tip’s release party at the Kit Kat Club in Times Square.
The booking camera caught him in a black turtleneck and leather jacket, slate stamped “12-03-99”—the front-and-profile composite you see above. Within hours he was arraigned on first-degree assault, posted $50,000 bail, and walked free while vowing to fight the charge.
A grand jury later indicted him, but after nearly two years of motions and witness wrangling he accepted a plea deal on 17 October 2001, admitting third-degree assault (a misdemeanor) in exchange for three years’ probation—avoiding a possible 15-year sentence.
The photo has since become a rap-culture relic: proof that the future billionaire mogul once faced real prison time at the height of his Vol. 3 fame. In later interviews Rivera even suggested Jay-Z wasn’t the actual stabber—adding yet another layer of myth to an already-legendary mugshot.
