Late on 27 August 2010 a Las Vegas motorcycle officer pulled over the Cadillac Escalade carrying 29-year-old Paris Hilton and club-owner boyfriend Cy Waits after smelling what looked like marijuana smoke.
While hunting for lip balm, Hilton’s purse spilled—dropping a packet that lab tests showed held 0.8 g of cocaine. She was booked at the Clark County Detention Center for felony possession and released before dawn, smiling in the now-famous braid-and-tan mugshot above.
Hilton returned to court on 20 September 2010, pleading guilty to two misdemeanors (drug possession and obstructing an officer). The deal spared a felony: 1 year of probation, 200 hours of community service, $2,000 in fines and a court-mandated drug-abuse program—with 12-month suspended jail terms hanging over any slip-up.
