2Pac 1995 Thick Oversized T-Shirt
Mugshot Story
After being sentenced on 7 February 1995 to 1½ – 4½ years for first-degree sexual-abuse, 23-year-old Tupac Shakur was transferred from Riker’s Island to the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York on 8 March 1995.
Intake staff snapped the front-and-profile photo you see below, the slate reading “NYS DOCS | SHAKUR T. | 95-A-1140 | 3 8 95.” Within 24 hours he was moved from general population to protective custody, confined to a 6 × 9 ft cell and issued the standard green prison fatigues—an abrupt shift from platinum rap star to prisoner number.
Shakur’s stay in Dannemora lasted roughly eight months. On 12 October 1995, Death Row Records boss Suge Knight put up a $1.4 million bond, springing Pac in return for a three-album deal that would start with All Eyez on Me.
The image that once marked his lowest ebb quickly became a badge of resilience and the opening scene of hip-hop’s most famous comeback.
