Mugshot Story

On 3 March 1960, two years after being drafted, Sergeant E-5 Elvis A. Presley stepped into the out-processing office at Fort Dix, New Jersey. As part of the routine discharge paperwork every soldier posed for an identification photo while holding a placard; Elvis’s board read simply “PRESLEY ELVIS A.”

Over time the square, front-facing shot—with its blank backdrop and slate—was mistaken for a criminal mugshot, but no arrest was involved: it was a standard U.S. Army personnel record taken the day he returned to civilian status.

Fans mobbed the base gates, the press chronicled his every move, and within 24 hours the freshly released King of Rock ’n’ Roll flew home to Memphis, then on to Nashville sessions that produced Stuck on You and the GI Blues soundtrack—proof that the “mugshot” actually marks the bridge between his soldiering years and the chart-topping 1960s comeback.
